White crystal, volatility, hygroscopicity; decomposable into trimethylamine and chloromethane above 230℃; soluble in methanol, soluble in water and hot ethanol, insoluble in diethyl ether and chloroform; toxic, median lethal dose (mice, abdomen) 25mg/kg; irritation; relative density: d4201.169.

3.Application:
1) Mainly used as phase transfer catalyst .
2) Can be used as polarographic analytical reagent.
3)A corrosion inhibitor for battery anodes, e.g., metals such as zinc, lead, and the like, in primary battery cells, comprises a quaternary ammonium salt, particularly, tetraalkyl ammonium chloride.More preferably Tetraheptyl ammonium chloride.
